1 Bishops Waltham Action Group Newsletter #7

Email: info@bwactiongroup.org.uk
Web: www.bwactiongroup.org.uk

Dear [FIRSTNAME]

Bishops Waltham Action Group was formed following the Annual Parish Meeting on 22nd April 2009 as a response to the proposal for a new Sainsbury's store at Abbey Mill.

Our aim is to campaign against the proposed development as inappropriate to the site and the needs of the village.

The action group believes that the plan for a Sainsbury's in Bishops Waltham is not a done deal and that residents of this community can make a real difference in determining the  future of Bishops Waltham.

NEWS

SAINSBURY CAMPAIGNERS TAKE FIGHT TO DOWNING ST

So says last Thursdays headline in the Hampshire Chronicle. The Chronicle have reported on the success of our online petition to Number 10, which is all due to the effort you and the other readers of our newsletter put into getting us to the magical 500 signatures position.

Henry Fryer, Chairman of the action group said: "Nearly 600 people want to tell the Prime Minister that opposition to Sainsbury's plans for the Bishop's Waltham Abbey Mill site symbolises an issue of national importance"

Thanks again for your support on this, and we will let you know when we receive the official response.

PLANNERS APPOINTED

More Good news! We have engaged leading lawyers Blake Lapthorn to fight our case. The firm's Special Planning Team will advise us on tactics, and present their objections when Sainsbury's formally submits its plans. We believe a massive supermarket so close to Bishops Waltham's long-established and much-loved High Street shopping centre would have a disastrous effect on this 800-year-old towns vitality and commercial viability. However, from what we have seen of Sainsbury's proposals we believe there are several grounds on which to fight them and win.

Henry Fryer, chairman of the Bishops Waltham Action Group, said: "A supermarket of this size would result in the irreversible decline in the character of our town, and we are delighted that Blake Lapthorn have agreed to represent us. We couldn't be in better hands, and Bishops Waltham residents have responded magnificently to our appeal to fund this professional support."

WHERES THE APPLICATION?

We are currently inundated with questions regarding the whereabouts of Sainsbury's planning application for the Abbey Mill site. We have been told by other campaign groups that supermarkets can often drag out the process, in the hope that the fervent opposition will falter. Thus when the crucial time arrives they are not faced with as much opposition as the initial uproar suggested.

We are primed to react the moment the application is submitted, but in the meantime all we can ask of you is to keep up the momentum of support.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Every Newsletter we hope to provide you with a couple of quick things you help us with:

SPREAD THE NEWS(LETTER)

We currently have 300+ residents who are receiving this newsletter. However we want more. Here is how you can help:

Do you have any friends or neighbours who may be interested in what is going on? Get them to visit the BWAG website and subscribe to the newsletter (its free!)

Do you know anyone who does not have access to email? Can you print off a copy and deliver it to them?

We keep the format of this newsletter simple, so as not to clog your inbox, however there is a fancy version that you can download from the website. Please pass it on so we can talk to more people.

Finally, we welcome submissions on anything related to the campaign or Bishop's Waltham. Just send to the email address at the top.

DONATIONS

This is an ongoing request and likely to be a fixture in the What Can You Do section.  We are very grateful for the money that has come in so far and we would like to thank everyone that has done so.

If you would like to make a donation then you can do this by credit or debit card via the Paypal donate button on the new website by clicking here (Paypal will handle the payment securely, BWAG does not receive any card details).  You do not need a Paypal account.

Alternatively you can also donate via cheque made payable to Bishops Waltham Action Group or BWAG. Please send these to; BWAG, 2 Merlin Mews, Houchin Street, Bishops Waltham, SO32 1AR

A local chartered accountant is BWAG's treasurer.  All funds are held in a bank account with Barclays Bank in Bishops Waltham.  Five committee members are signatories to that account and everything to do with the account has to be authorised by two people.
